What makes a stay here rewarding.

Fes is absorbing because so much is happening at the scale of a doorway or a workbench. You hear metal being worked, pass bread on its way to the oven and step from a narrow lane into an unexpectedly elaborate courtyard. The craft is still part of the city’s daily economy.

A guided first walk makes those details easier to read. After that, a slower outing can be just as rewarding: revisit a favourite lane, look properly at a piece of pottery, or sit above the medina over lunch. It is a city for attention rather than speed.

How your time could unfold.

A suggested rhythm, shaped around your interests and pace. Your confirmed itinerary sets out the visits, activities and meals included.

  1. Morning

Meet your guide near the medina and follow a route through markets, a madrasa and artisan quarters. Build in stops to watch the work and ask questions.

  2. Afternoon

Pause over a Fassi lunch, then choose a museum or pottery visit. The tannery viewpoint can fit into the walk, but you do not need to make it the centre of the day.

  3. Evening

Return to your riad before dinner. A meal in a courtyard and a quiet rooftop view can be a welcome finish after a day of close, busy lanes.

Worth making time for.

Fes el-Bali

The old medina is the main experience: workshops, neighbourhood commerce and historic buildings interwoven. Let a guide connect the stories.

Bou Inania or Al Attarine

These historic schools offer concentrated examples of tilework, carved plaster and wood. Choose according to the route and current access.

Nejjarine Museum

A former funduq, or merchants’ inn, provides an architectural setting for understanding woodcraft and decorative traditions.

Chouara tannery

The vats are usually seen from shop terraces. Expect a strong smell and a retail setting; a view does not require a leather purchase.

The details that shape your stay.

How much time makes sense?

Two nights give you one full medina day. Three nights leave room for a second, slower exploration or a separate excursion to Volubilis and Meknes. That excursion uses a substantial part of a day; it should not replace all your time in Fes.

What is the walking like?

The medina has slopes, uneven surfaces and narrow passages, with vehicle access limited to its edges. Tell us about mobility needs so the riad location, luggage assistance and walking route can be planned together.

What should I expect?

This is an intense, lived-in urban setting. Allow breaks from the bustle and keep shopping stops intentional. Some religious spaces have restricted visitor access, so appreciating the exterior and surrounding neighbourhood can be the appropriate experience.

How far is it from everywhere else?

By road with a private driver: Rabat 2.5 hours, Casablanca 3.5 hours, Chefchaouen 4 hours, Tangier 5 hours. Fes has its own airport, Fes-Saiss.

Why we make room for Fes.

We include Fes when history, craftsmanship or food are central to your interests. It gives northern and imperial-city routes real depth. If both Fes and Marrakech are included, we give each a different emphasis rather than repeat the same souk day.
