The blue medina
The appeal is the whole streetscape: painted walls, small squares and mountain backdrops. Early and later hours bring a different feel from the busiest midday period.
Morocco · In the Rif Mountains
Stay long enough for the blue lanes to become familiar.
A small hillside medina, mountain light and a slower northern interlude.

The blue streets bring people to Chefchaouen, but staying overnight gives them more than the familiar photograph. Early walks, café tables on the square and the mountains above the roofs let you notice the town at different hours.
Its small scale is part of the charm. You do not need a long attraction list to enjoy it. A good stay leaves room for a second walk through the medina or a day in the surrounding landscape, instead of treating the whole place as a quick photo stop.
A suggested rhythm, shaped around your interests and pace. Your confirmed itinerary sets out the visits, activities and meals included.
Explore the medina early, taking the stairs and side lanes at your own pace. Remember that many of the most photographed doorways belong to homes.
Have lunch around Outa el Hammam, visit the kasbah or browse local weaving. On a longer stay, give Akchour its own outing rather than attach a hike to a full town day.
Walk towards the Spanish Mosque viewpoint if the climb suits you, or choose a terrace in town. Stay for the changing light before returning for dinner.
The appeal is the whole streetscape: painted walls, small squares and mountain backdrops. Early and later hours bring a different feel from the busiest midday period.
The central square is a natural place to pause. The kasbah adds a garden and a different view of the town’s setting.
A walk towards the spring at the edge of the medina connects the town with the water and slopes around it.
A separate excursion into the Rif for trails and river scenery. Route length, water levels and footing need checking before choosing the walk.
Two nights allow the town to bookend a full day. Add a night for a proper mountain outing. A day trip is possible on some northern routes, but it gives you more travel and less of the quiet morning and evening atmosphere.
Small does not mean flat: the medina has plenty of steps and slopes. Accommodation location matters for luggage and mobility. We would match the walking and viewpoint choices to your comfort.
Popular photo lanes can be crowded, and residents should never be treated as scenery. Mountain weather changes the experience; bring layers and suitable shoes. Chefchaouen is reached by road, so its place in the route needs enough transfer time.
By road with a private driver: M’diq 1.5 hours, Tangier 2.5 hours, Fes 4 hours. The nearest airport is Tangier Ibn Battouta, about 2.5 hours by road.
We include Chefchaouen when photography, smaller places and mountain scenery matter to you. It is especially rewarding on a route through Tangier and Fes. For a short southern itinerary, the additional distance can outweigh the benefit.
