What makes a stay here rewarding.

The reason to travel to Merzouga is the landscape around Erg Chebbi: dunes that change colour as the sun drops, the effort of walking up a ridge and the scale of the sky once evening arrives. Staying overnight lets you see the place at its most rewarding hours.

It is also a substantial journey from Morocco’s main cities. The best version gives the drive its own interest and avoids arriving exhausted just before sunset. Camps vary in location, comfort and atmosphere, so choosing the right one matters as much as choosing the desert itself.

How your time could unfold.

A suggested rhythm, shaped around your interests and pace. Your confirmed itinerary sets out the visits, activities and meals included.

  1. Afternoon arrival

Reach the dune area with time to settle in. Arrange the transfer to camp around your comfort; a camel ride can be an option, and should not be assumed to suit everyone.

  2. Sunset & evening

Walk out onto the sand while the light softens, then return for dinner. Leave time to look at the night sky; cloud, moonlight and nearby camp lighting affect what you see.

  3. The next morning

Wake early for the first light before breakfast. With a second night, use the day for a slower local outing and rest instead of heading straight back onto a long road journey.

Worth making time for.

Erg Chebbi

The dunes are the main attraction. Seeing them at both dusk and dawn gives you more than a midday photograph.

An overnight camp

A chance to experience the desert after day visitors have left. Ask about the exact setting, bathroom arrangements, heating or cooling and evening atmosphere.

Walking on the sand

A short walk can be enough to appreciate the landscape; climbing dunes is more tiring than the distance suggests.

The wider desert edge

A guided outing can introduce nearby settlements, oases or regional culture. Choose a visit with substance and enough time for conversation.

The details that shape your stay.

How much time does it really need?

One night at the dunes gives you sunset and sunrise, but the travel days either side still count. Two nights reduce the pressure. A route from Marrakech usually needs intermediate overnight stops to make the whole journey enjoyable.

When is it most comfortable?

The cooler months, broadly autumn through spring, are generally more suitable. Summer heat can be extreme, and winter nights can be cold. Camp comfort and clothing need to fit your actual dates.

What should I expect?

Erg Chebbi is a popular destination with camps and vehicle activity; a photograph cannot guarantee isolation or silence. Tell us whether you want a sociable evening or a quieter setting. Sand, uneven ground and camp access deserve consideration if mobility is limited.

How far is it from everywhere else?

By road with a private driver: Aït Benhaddou 5 hours, Fes 8 hours, Marrakech 9 hours. The nearest airport is Fes-Saiss, about 8 hours by road.

Why we make room for Merzouga.

We choose Merzouga when the Sahara is one of your main reasons for coming and your trip has room for the journey. The desert should be a highlight you can enjoy, with a route that makes sense on both sides of it.
